Our Halloween in pictures

Halloween day…early morning. She was tired of being lava girl and decided to be a princess instead. She was also ready for trick or treating at 9 am and not afraid to show it

At a trunk or treat..Chloe’s lost her wig because she’s decided with her hair up she loks more like Cinderella. (Don’t tell her she’s wearing the dress from Tangled. Don’t suggest that she’s maybe Tangled after Ryder cuts her hair off. ) Cat is content in her Taylor Swift costume and I’m a cleaning fairy

A close up of my costume…wings do make cleaning more fun by the way

Taylor Swift costume

The kid changed her mind about being a Squid monster and went  an entirely different direction. She now wants to be Taylor Swift for Halloween. I didn’t think that would be too hard to create.

We just needed a Taylor-like dress,the kid’s blonde wig  and a guitar,right?

We had plans for a sparkly under the knee number when we hit Goodwill last week. There are always tons of these when I go there looking for books to alter. Now that I wanted to buy one though they seemed to have vanished.

I decided we’d go wispy and long instead. Luckily there were lots of these available. The kid picked out a pretty turquoise one that I almost wanted to keep for myself.

I didn’t but there were a few moments I was really close to doing that. We din’t have to  alter it much. The straps had to cut so that it wouldn’t hang down too low, but that was about it.

Now for the guitar.

I thought of making this out of foam board but we weren’t scheduled to make any trips to the stores and I was getting antsy.

(That might sound weird but I don’t drive my husband hates shopping we wait til we have several stops to make and get them out of the way all at once. )

I ended up making the guitar out of cardboard instead. I drew a guitar on the largest piece of cardboard I had and cut this out. Several layers of cardboard were glued onto this one to make the guitar more stable. I learned quickly that it was better to trace the shape onto the cardboard and cut it out before gluing it down but I learned that the hard way and almost broke my scissors trying to cut through two layers of cardboard at once.

If you are familiar with Taylor Swift(and I am now very familiar with Taylor Swift,by the way) there are different styles of guitar she uses. We picked the sparkly one. Because if you have the choice to pick a sparkly guitar you always  pick it,obviously.

Bet you didn’t know that Taylor likes to rock out every now and then.:)

This is just a layer of glue and glitter with gesso on top to keep it from coming off too easily. I’m thinking we need more glitter.

The strap is fabric and was tied onto one of the middle  pieces of cardboard.

I’ve made her boots too but I need to try them on the kid before I show them off. If you need to make boot cover for a costume though I highly recommend this post. It was a life saver when I was trying to figure out how to do this. (I love the internet. :)

So that’s the girls taken care of for Halloween. My costume has been sorted out too now. I might possibly be sharing it soon.

Lava Girl costume made easy

When my youngest told us that she wanted to be a princess this Halloween I honestly gave a sigh of relief. I mean “Princess” is one of those costumes that can be easy to put together if you happen to be someone who likes to wait til the last minute to do something.

One of us here might be like that…. but I’m not saying.

When Gizmo changed her mind a week later and said she’d rather be Lavagirl from the Shark boy and Lava girl movie, I freaked out a little.I waited before acting but she seemed pretty sure on this costume choice  and unlikely to budge.

Lavagirl is a huge hit with my girls and they pretty much know the movie by heart. I like Lavagirl too but I wasn’t sure where I was going to find a Lavagirl costume. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one and the movie did come out ages ago(The boy who plays Sharkboy being known more widely these days as Jacob Black from Twilight fame. Eeek! Where did the years go?)

I calmed down once I had a piece of chocolate and went web browsing. It turns out savvy mommas out there have faced these dilema themselves and come up with some pretty awesome homemade costumes.

My all time favorite was this one.

It hit my sewing expertise which meant it seemed simple, and had to be  something I could sew by hand.

We ended up with this:

and here’s another snap:

And my kid loves it especially because she has that lovely pink wig which was a recent birthday gift from her Grandma Rose and Grandpa Nigel(one of many fantastic gifts).

She loved the outfit so much I had to beg and plead her to not wear it to bed until after Halloween.(My sewing skills are not at all able to withstand the  tossing and turning my littles are known for.)

How I did it:

This  was just a case of finding two pinkish items of clothing and then finding something magenta colored. An older shirt that I never really wore much fit the color so I cut out what I needed and sewed the pieces on. Yellow felt worked for the cracks of fire showing around the lava rocks. This was a way for me to re-purpose items(something I like to do whenever I am able) and not have to spend any money(something I also like to do when I am able.) The only item I couldn’t make of course being the wig.

I largely followed the example from the link I share but also relied on pictures of Lavagirl I found through web searches. (Did you know that pictures of lavagirl from the back are not at all popular? I guesstimated what it would look like but will probably be surprised the next time we watch this movie again.)

Now we are just trying to figure out shoe covers for her everyday, not Lavagirl enough, shoes. I have just enough Magneta left and will probably be working on that step five minutes before we head out the door on Halloween.

Old habits do die hard after all. :)
