How To Make:Pumpkin Pie Hair Clips

I’ve been having fun making the girls hair clips for a while now so I knew I wanted them to have something for Thanksgiving.

I came up with some pumpkin pie hair clips but as you can see there are a lot of options when it comes to felt and personalizing hair clips to suit the occasion.

I have a video up at YouTube that shows how I made the pumpkin pie ones:

And while we are on the subject of hair clips I also wanted to share the neat hair clip holder I bought recently to keep all of these off the ground and hopefully lead to calmer mornings.(What? It could happen…)

It’s from Tabitha’s Creations and you can find more of these here in lots of different patterns.

We hope to add a head band holder to our wall next.

If you liked this post you might like this one on a hand print turkey necklace that I made last year.

Have a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Lava Girl costume made easy

When my youngest told us that she wanted to be a princess this Halloween I honestly gave a sigh of relief. I mean “Princess” is one of those costumes that can be easy to put together if you happen to be someone who likes to wait til the last minute to do something.

One of us here might be like that…. but I’m not saying.

When Gizmo changed her mind a week later and said she’d rather be Lavagirl from the Shark boy and Lava girl movie, I freaked out a little.I waited before acting but she seemed pretty sure on this costume choice  and unlikely to budge.

Lavagirl is a huge hit with my girls and they pretty much know the movie by heart. I like Lavagirl too but I wasn’t sure where I was going to find a Lavagirl costume. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one and the movie did come out ages ago(The boy who plays Sharkboy being known more widely these days as Jacob Black from Twilight fame. Eeek! Where did the years go?)

I calmed down once I had a piece of chocolate and went web browsing. It turns out savvy mommas out there have faced these dilema themselves and come up with some pretty awesome homemade costumes.

My all time favorite was this one.

It hit my sewing expertise which meant it seemed simple, and had to be  something I could sew by hand.

We ended up with this:

and here’s another snap:

And my kid loves it especially because she has that lovely pink wig which was a recent birthday gift from her Grandma Rose and Grandpa Nigel(one of many fantastic gifts).

She loved the outfit so much I had to beg and plead her to not wear it to bed until after Halloween.(My sewing skills are not at all able to withstand the  tossing and turning my littles are known for.)

How I did it:

This  was just a case of finding two pinkish items of clothing and then finding something magenta colored. An older shirt that I never really wore much fit the color so I cut out what I needed and sewed the pieces on. Yellow felt worked for the cracks of fire showing around the lava rocks. This was a way for me to re-purpose items(something I like to do whenever I am able) and not have to spend any money(something I also like to do when I am able.) The only item I couldn’t make of course being the wig.

I largely followed the example from the link I share but also relied on pictures of Lavagirl I found through web searches. (Did you know that pictures of lavagirl from the back are not at all popular? I guesstimated what it would look like but will probably be surprised the next time we watch this movie again.)

Now we are just trying to figure out shoe covers for her everyday, not Lavagirl enough, shoes. I have just enough Magneta left and will probably be working on that step five minutes before we head out the door on Halloween.

Old habits do die hard after all. :)
