My kid turned five and I took forever to write a post about it

I should say my youngest kid turned five but I don’t want you to think that I’m suffering from “my baby is growing up way too fast” blues over here.

Not too badly anyway.

I’m not really sure why it’s taken me so long to write this but I am still sharing a computer and my husband has been very busy adding free fonts to Dafont lately.

(That was my shameless and totally random linking to Goblin King’s current projects plug, hope you don’t mind.)

Mostly I’m a horrible blogger.

That being said I’d like to share a little of my littlest’s day with you.

I had a table decoration ready and awaiting her.

This is fancy for us, usually we stick with  a banner and balloons.

I had actually made this for a birthday party we planned on giving Giz last week but that has been moved to November.

The jack o’latern theme dint seem appropriate for a November party but fine for a day of at home birthday fun.

As Gizmo loves baking I let her help me make her birthday cake and the cupcakes I wanted to take by my parents later. (Which is not a mean thing to do despite what Goblin king thought about it!)

I also let her help me decorate. We faltered between making a cute monster cake,a pumpkin cake even a sugar skull cake like the one we saw here which Gizmo had loved on sight.

In the end we went with Ghosts as our theme.

Ghosts because Gizmo loved the idea of a big mommy ghost and a lot of little baby ghosts following her.

After picking up the Kid from school and going by my parents house(Grandpa and Grandpa Puente) we came home and opened presents with my daughters’ other grandparents(Grandma Rose,Grandpa Nigel who live in England)  via webcam.

We wrapped the day up by having dinner at Mr Gatti’s and then coming back home for cake and a few more presents.

It was a really great day and Gizmo seemed to enjoy it a lot.

You can see a little of  my decoration making and our cake making below.

Updates and Happenings

There are a couple of interesting things going on right now. I thought it’d be fun to do an update of sorts.
Today is my husband’s birthday. He’s pretty awesome…I mean obviously.I married him after all, right? ;)
The girls and I got to make him a nice chocolate cake- I kinda love their last minute idea of adding fruit snacks. (Although in case you are wondering gummy snacks on cake are just as chewy as they sound.)

My husband started a youtube channel where he shares videos of what he he working on at the moment. He’s a very talented and if you’d like to pick up some tips or just like watching art being created then I hope you’ll check his channel out.

I’m wrapping up my participation in Twinkle,Twinkle’s Summer of Color over at my art blog. I’ve loved participating every week and seeing how everyone interprets the color for the week. It’s been really fun! (That bird above was inspired by mint chocolate chip ice cream.)

I’ve also started making a Smash,Art,Words smashbook for poetspice’s  youtube challenge. Everyday of July we will attempt to make a page for our smashbooks and then document them via vlog. I’ll probably be updating weekly as opposed to daily. I’m super excited to be doing this as it’s an oppourtunity for me to do something I’ve never done before(a smashbook) and for me to ease myself into vlogging.

The girls and I will also be doing crafts on my youtube channel in the future. I’ll share our first one with you later this week. It’s not as great as it could be but I hope to get much better with time!

I was asked about how our garden was doing the other day-our garden is pretty much dead. We did have one sugar pumpkin vine survive though and we have these little buddies to ease our pain.

I’m just not gifted with a green thumb, at all. This vine actually came from seeds my kids planted in their mud area. I’m hoping to plant again but closer to the house next time.  The sun is just too intense in our yard!

Now for Camp Nanowrimo and Junowrimo…in case you’ve never heard of these they are a writing challenge where you try to write a 50,000 novel in thirty days. I did not get to 50,000 words but I’m still glad that I tried this. I’ll be trying again come November if all goes well. (Si Dios quiere, God willing,  my mother would say.)

Those are our updates for now. I plan on combining my other blogs into this one somehow in the future. I have four blogs right now and I think just keeping to one for now would be a better idea.

My Gizmo’s Rapunzel Cake

Gizmo is a huge fan of Rapunzel. She’s loved every variation of the story that she’s been introduced to. She loved the storybook version, The Fairytale Theater version and when she saw it, the Barbie version. I’d have to say though that the Tangled movie is her favorite Rapunzel variation so far. Tangled actually knocked The Little Mermaid off her favorite Disney Princess of all time pedestal, which was no small feat I assure you.

It didn’t surprise me too much then, when I asked Gizmo what kind of Birthday cake she would like this year and she answered Tangled!  I asked if she wanted me to buy an actual Tangled cake(because I would’ve been fine with that because…well,HEB whipped cream frosting, yum) or if she wanted me to make her a Rapunzel cake. She said she wanted me to make a Rapunzel cake, so I got to planning.

This is what I came up with:

It was a strawberry cake with strawberry frosting per Gizmo’s request. (I dyed the frosting with food colors when needed.)

I baked the cake using a large rectangle pan(shown in picture) and cut out the shapes that I used once the cake had cooled. Rapunzel is made out of marshmillow, one of Gizmo’s favorite treats. This cake was made the night before Gizmo’s birthday, carefully covered and kept inside the cooled oven until her party.

Gizmo woke up to pink pancakes, our traditional family birthday breakfast.

She also got to open her birthday cards from her Grandparents, Aunt Uncle and cousin in England.

The girls usually recieve at least one birthday badge from their English relatives but this year Gizmo got 4! I thought that this was both fitting and pretty cool.(Of course I lost the picture I took of her wearing all four badges at once.)

I was also able to tell Gizmo that some of her very close friends(who  also happen to be her cousins) would be coming  by to celebrate with her later. She was really happy about that and then very impatient so I’ll be saving surprises like that til closer to the time of the party next time.)

~*. ~*PARTY TIME.*~.*

Gizmo’s little friends and her were very pleased with the Rapunzel cake.

We all sang Happy Birthday, presents were opened and even though the whole thing was simple I could tell that Gizmo had a great time.
