A Playdate, Jennifer Egan style

I, like many others I’m sure, have been tuning into twitter every night for a book written entirely in tweet form.

This book, Black Box is written by Jennifer Egan (the author of  A Visit from the Goon Squad) and it is being tweeted out by the New Yorker,@NYerFiction.

I love the idea of a book by tweet. The idea is so new and original that I thought I could only do one thing to honor it, copy the idea myself. So below you will find yesterday’s play date tweeted out as I would’ve tweeted it out had I not been afraid to get my kindle wet or covered in pizza sauce or glitter glue. Ahem, I mean because I was very busy watching the littles-obviously.*Each little section is 140 characters or less…..I know this because I may have checked it via twitter first.

If your house is clean by the time of your scheduled playdate, your company will be late.

If your house is still a mess and you are running around frantically your company will be early.

This is the way of the universe and make peace with it you must. (Yes,you should say that mantra in a Yoda voice and say it often.)

Your children will check the digital clock in the kitchen, look out the window and ask”When will they be here?” in a seemingly endless loop.

Your company will arrive very  late but bearing pizza and all will be forgiven.

You will realize that your prior plan of making grilled cheese sandwiches shaped like puppy dogs for five children was hilarious.

If your guests arrive wearing swimwear, hindsight will tell you that your time could have been spent putting swimwear on your children too.

You will ask your hindsight to mind it’s own business and watch your guests while you go do that now.

Now that everyone is dressed in swimsuits they will decide they want to eat pizza first.

Once pizza is eaten and the children start looking out the window, they’re probably ready to play with the water ballons you promised them.

Calm the fear in your heart it will be fine.

At some point your child will discover that their ability to launch water at their playmate is easier with the water balloon left untied.

This is good because your hindsight is probably  surprised you didn’t have a water balloons ready for the play date beforehand.

As official water balloon re-filler you can be expecting to stay in a bent over position by the tap for the next hour.

Should the area around the tap become a muddy mess you can declare it a no wetting zone for safety’s sake.

This is partly true but also by this time getting soaked by open water balloon while hunched over will start to get a little tiring.

Do not let show this or the no wetting zone will become moot-carry on as though having your pant leg soaked is the funnest thing ever.

The next forty minutes will be spent getting everyone dressed and re-dressed and doing something with all of the wet clothes and shoes.

If your hindsight can be coaxed back out of his office apologize for yelling at him earlier and you can get dry again yourself.

A word on craft projects, if you don’t have one set up everyone will be expecting one.

If you set one up no one will be interested in doing it. Set one up anyway.

It will all turn out fine in the end and as your guests leave your child will turn to you and say that it was the best play date ever.

She always says this same thing after every play date but it will flood you with happy just the same.

If you’d like to take a look at Jenifer Egan’s book tweets You cane see them here. If you’ve missed the installments so far you can read a recap of all of the tweets here. :)

And then I got to meet the Bloggess

Some days are just lovely and full of butterflies……..and maybe zombies.

Like when your bloggy idol just happens to have grown up very close to your city and just happens to have also gone to college there so it’s included in her book tour. And this would normally never happen, because most of  the book tours that stop here are for western novels, but it did and I got to be there to witness it.

(Also I say bloggy idol lightly- as in I hang on every word that this woman writes not  as in I have a shrine built to her in our hallway closet, obviously. Also please never come over without calling first-because we are messy not because I need some notice so that I can dispose of said shrine.)

Seriously though, there is no shrine here………but I did stitch up a zombie Bloggess to give to Jenny Lawson at the book signing. Because that is what good fans do. And I did have a moment of panic as to whether she would be cool with it, mostly because my husband said “She’s going to think you are nuts. You are taking her a dead version of herself.”

I had to correct him because I was taking her an undead version of herself, which is absolutely okay…..I’m figuring. (He basically has no Bloggess or zombie knowledge, but I love him anyway.)Plus, I had a back story for her.

See this is Jenny and she’s not made it through the zombie apocalypse without becoming a zombie herself, unfortunately. But she’s still managed to keep a bit of her bloggess-ness. She only eats the brains of bad guys and whacks the zombies that eat the brains of good guys with her hair dryer. She’s like a zombie secret agent.

I meant to explain this to Jenny at the book signing but I totally geeked out so I just held out my zombie doll while I smiled like some lunatic. Luckily she guessed that it was a zombie her and was very nice about the whole thing.

We had been given post -its so that we could jot down  what we wanted Jenny to write into our books  and my mind went seriously blank. I had the brainstorm that it would be beyond cool to have her sign my book to Squidmom as some way of connecting as fellow bloggers and also because I just really like seeing Squidmom in print. Of course once we were in line I thought that this was a horribly tacky idea.  I still kinda wanted it signed that way though,so I wrote “I’m sorry, this is tacky but you are full of awesome” on the post-it note too. (Because that is what sane people do.)

I was next in line when it dawned on me that the whole purpose of the post-its was to make the transaction go as quickly and smoothly as possible and that my post-it was just giving Jenny extra and unnecessary reading material  but it was too late to change it or get a new post-it.

This is what my book ended up  looking like:

Proof that The Bloggess is in fact full of all that is awesome(and understanding). Post-its don’t lie y’all.

*Finished reading Let’s Pretend This Never Happened this morning and I loved it even more than I thought I would. I was also happy to read about Jenny’s account of her own  fan girl moment when she met Evany Thomas-which truthfully made me feel a heck of a lot better.:)

Spinning

When I was younger one of my favorite things in the world to do was spinning around and around with my eyes closed and then grabbing onto to the wall till the world stopped spinning. I loved that feeling of losing all control and abandoning myself to it.

Now that I’m older…I hate that feeling. I do not like feeling out of control. I need to know what I’m doing and I need for things to flow easily. That has not been my life for the past couple weeks  though.

I feel discombobulated,or as my mother would say,”like a chicken with it’s head cut off.”  It sometimes seems like everything  could slip through my fingers at any minute. Nothing is organized, I am losing everything all the time and I forget about things more often then I’d like to admit. My world is spinning and I don’t like it, not one little bit.

I don’t know why this is.  Maybe there’s not enough time in the day for all that I really want to do. I don’t know, but I mean to find out.

I don’t understand how most of yall do it- I think it takes a really put together person to be able to keep up with blogging/social media and life, I admire you. So this space may be more empty then not for a while, I still intend to post just not as often as I was doing. The truth is I never figured out what I wanted from Squidmom, it’s kinda choppy because I just write whatever I feel like writing. It’s hard for me to focus on one area. I probably never will- I don’t know. My one year blog anniversary is coming up in September and I’d like to know what I’m about by then, okay what my blog is about by then. I’d also like to get back to visiting more blogs then I’m doing now. If I subscribe to you I read you but I hardly ever go by and visit sites anymore(I hate that).

So I’ll be around, just a little less often.

I’ve been doing a weight loss progress blog on tumblr that what’s showing up on my sidebar. I’m keeping up with that because it helps me to feel accountable. I’m taking a little time off Twitter too, I may be there from time to time but not as often as I was doing. I love y’all all and hopefully  I’ll be back soon and by soon. Thank you for your support if you’ve shown it, I really appreciate it.

Lydia
