Lava Girl costume made easy

When my youngest told us that she wanted to be a princess this Halloween I honestly gave a sigh of relief. I mean “Princess” is one of those costumes that can be easy to put together if you happen to be someone who likes to wait til the last minute to do something.

One of us here might be like that…. but I’m not saying.

When Gizmo changed her mind a week later and said she’d rather be Lavagirl from the Shark boy and Lava girl movie, I freaked out a little.I waited before acting but she seemed pretty sure on this costume choice  and unlikely to budge.

Lavagirl is a huge hit with my girls and they pretty much know the movie by heart. I like Lavagirl too but I wasn’t sure where I was going to find a Lavagirl costume. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one and the movie did come out ages ago(The boy who plays Sharkboy being known more widely these days as Jacob Black from Twilight fame. Eeek! Where did the years go?)

I calmed down once I had a piece of chocolate and went web browsing. It turns out savvy mommas out there have faced these dilema themselves and come up with some pretty awesome homemade costumes.

My all time favorite was this one.

It hit my sewing expertise which meant it seemed simple, and had to be  something I could sew by hand.

We ended up with this:

and here’s another snap:

And my kid loves it especially because she has that lovely pink wig which was a recent birthday gift from her Grandma Rose and Grandpa Nigel(one of many fantastic gifts).

She loved the outfit so much I had to beg and plead her to not wear it to bed until after Halloween.(My sewing skills are not at all able to withstand the  tossing and turning my littles are known for.)

How I did it:

This  was just a case of finding two pinkish items of clothing and then finding something magenta colored. An older shirt that I never really wore much fit the color so I cut out what I needed and sewed the pieces on. Yellow felt worked for the cracks of fire showing around the lava rocks. This was a way for me to re-purpose items(something I like to do whenever I am able) and not have to spend any money(something I also like to do when I am able.) The only item I couldn’t make of course being the wig.

I largely followed the example from the link I share but also relied on pictures of Lavagirl I found through web searches. (Did you know that pictures of lavagirl from the back are not at all popular? I guesstimated what it would look like but will probably be surprised the next time we watch this movie again.)

Now we are just trying to figure out shoe covers for her everyday, not Lavagirl enough, shoes. I have just enough Magneta left and will probably be working on that step five minutes before we head out the door on Halloween.

Old habits do die hard after all. :)

Nice Day for a Bunny Wedding

It all started on Sunday morning with Gizmo, “I want to get married today. Will you marry me today?” she asked her big sister who promptly removed little sister’s hand from her arm and answered with a loud,”No!”

There were tears, there was  annoyance, there was running and the slamming of doors(the kid tried explaining why she wouldn’t marry her sister once and then started to run away from her while Giz chased her yelling, “Marry me please! Marry me, I just want to get married!”)

I finally stepped in,” Your sister doesn’t want to marry you sweetie, maybe you could marry your bear or something instead?”

That led to Giz biting her nails while thinking it over and the kid coming back with a large bear in tow.

“I don’t want to marry him.” Giz pushed the bear away roughly and it fell to the floor with a thud.

“Maybe you could pick a different one to marry then?”

The Kid came back with our beloved Giraffe-moose, we call him that because he’s a moose..with giraffe spots. I don’t know why he has giraffe markings but he’s been a favorite ever since my brother gave him to the Kid on her first Valentine’s Day.

“Yes, that one but he doesn’t want to marry me.” the kid and I exchanged looks and Giz ran out herself this time, when she came back she was carrying a large blue Easter  bunny.

“He’s going to marry her.” said Gizmo, grinning  triumphantly.

“She needs a dress and flowers. I’m making the dress.” the kid set to work looking through my fabric scraps and Giz and I went outside to pick flowers.

Two dresses(Easter rabbit had to have a bridesmaid once Gizmo decided she wanted to help make a dress too) a vase of wild flowers, a bouquet of the same flowers and a reception table in our kitchen later and we were all set to have a wedding.

“Where are you having the wedding?” I asked

“The front yard.”

“Not maybe in here somewhere instead? Or maybe the back yard? We could set it up nice for the wedding.”

“Nope, the front yard.”

I have no idea why the groom's side and the bride's side are so far away,it seemed rude to ask

So I helped them cart the wedding party plus quests onto our driveway and we set up the wedding while I felt a little silly in case our neighbors came out and saw me…well playing with stuffed animals.

I got around that by offering to take the wedding photos, but I still felt a little silly.

It was worth it though, the girls had a blast and it was a fun way to break up what had been a pretty slow day up to that point.

The kid voiced the parts of the lemur preacher and the bride and groom while Gizmo sat on the groom’s side and made the toys there clap at the appropriate times.

After “the wedding ” we came inside and were having  cupcakes at our pretend reception when we were surprised by a knock. It was my parents who had decided to stop in and check on us as we had been car-less for the past four days.

She had to try a slice of the wedding cake too...

“Grandma and Grandpa came for our wedding party!” Gizmo was overjoyed at this thought and luckily my parents were happy to play along. My mom even offered a wedding gift( a little notebook and a pen from her purse) and it was a nice little end to our bunny wedding.

Gizmo the Pretender

Gizmo my youngest is very into pretending. This started out with pretending to be animals. If she wanted to be a kitty she would actually be a kitty for most of the day and sometimes for a couple days at a time.

She also liked for me to pretend to be what she was pretending to be, so if she was a kitty cat I needed to pretend to be a mamma cat..which I usually didn’t mind( although there were probably a few times out in public where people might’ve wondered what was up with the two humans meowing at each other). We had just gotten cats at the time so I figured that this was an extension of that;of observing their behavior.

But then she started to pretend to be a monkey for a while(and yes I pretended to be a mommy monkey too. )

I like that she pretends and it seems to be a normal kid thing that my first born never took to the level that my youngest does- it’s always interesting to me how into her pretend play that she gets and the ideas that she comes up with!

I’ve written about Mars girl before and she was a favorite for a very long while. She came out one day dressed up in odd clothes and said she was an alien and it only took my husband or I asking if she was an alien from Mars to make that idea take root. From there Mars girl became a visitor that popped by for visits once a day or so. Gizmo always left the room at the end of the visit and then came back rubbing her eyes as if she had been asleep pretending to be upset that she had missed the visit..again. She even chose to see the Christmas Lights as Mars Girl last year which was an interesting experience as it meant I got to ask if Christmas lights were used on Mars. This discussion led to Gizmo deciding that not only were Christmas lights used on Mars we were actually walking through Mars and it was our family who had decided to visit her home this time.

This annoyed the Kid a little because she can’t really understand why Gizmo makes up these scenarios and why I indulge her in them.   I do think it’s a good thing though, and not only for Gizmo, for the Kid as well. I think it opens the door for her to pretend too and the kid has come up with a few good pretends herself. Gizmo decided we were really visiting “Underland“(what she calls Wonderland )whenever we visited our Botanical Gardens, but the kid really expanded on that and made our day a pretty fun experience. The next day it was the Kid who decided the tunnels at our favorite park were really part of  the Labyrinth  and they had a lot of fun with that idea for many, many weekends.

Mars girl has been missing for a few weeks and I wondered if maybe Giz was growing out of her pretending stage.

And then Monster girl showed up. Gizmo came out of her room Wednesday and she had peeled the stickers off a caterpillar we had made together and placed them on the palms of her hands, on her face and on her toes and she let me know that she was monster girl but that she needed a tail.

I fixed her one out of chenille pipe cleaners and she started taking some out of the box herself and making herself fur- which just ended up being bracelets and anklets. She was wearing pigtails and I couldn’t  resist decorating those too and then she had to go show her daddy that a monster was in the house.

Monster girl, I am told, has a daddy monster who does silly stuff and she is just a little monster but has to do silly stuff as well. Silly stuff it turns out equals hiding half eaten apples on top of clean plates in their dish drawer and trying to scare our cat(he’s not amused).

I’m hoping the silly stuff doesn’t lead to my finding too many “surprises” and just curious to see what happens next.
