Corpus Christi or Bust

Car trip survival kit or you can pack carrots and fruit but everyone's going to just keep asking for goldfish, pack them anyway.

We set off for our trip yesterday at around 12, finally. I say finally because I had woken up at 6, and had everything including the girls all ready to go by 9, and we were pretty much just sitting around waiting after that.

Okay, to be fair there were many things that I was able to remember  that I had almost forgotten during that time. So it wasn’t an entirely bad thing. There was just a lot of faffing with the rental car, trying to keep the kids out of the snacks I had put together for the trip and just impatience to get over.

And there’s nothing like a little pre-trip venting on Facebook to help you get over that….and make you seem like an ungrateful wench.

But I’m grateful that we were able to get away, I am So grateful.

I learned a lot yesterday that I hadn’t known before. I learned that a crayola red mini wagon looking thing (I’m sorry I’m not at all good with cars or names of cars but I’ll find out later and replace this bit.) is a chick car. The Goblin King let me know that for pretty much the whole first 3 hours of our trip. “Do you see that? All these guys keep turning to see who is driving this vehicle because this is a chick car. Look there’s a car just like ours, who’s driving? Oh a girl with bright red lipstick and long blond hair, of course that’s who’s driving.” (And on and on and on…)

“If it bothered you so much why didn’t you just ask then to give you another one?”

“Oh, you know me I don’t like to make a fuss.”

“Oh ok, gotcha.”

I learned that my semi-hoarding ways come in handy when I am packing road trip snacks. I used all sorts of old containers that I had washed and put up for snack-age purposes. Yes mom, healthy snacks were among the snacks packed.

I also discovered that the “Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs” do not make good family road trip music. The Goblin King was not at all amused, and the gremlins got all kinds of rowdy, gremlin-like you might even say. So we tried to listen to the radio, and Kei$ha was playing on 3 stations. I decided the universe was laughing at my expense and we listened to country for a lot of the trip. Turns out traditional country is very chill traveling music. (I’m sorry but the only thing that I like about Kei$ha is I get to use a $ when typing her name.)

And I finally discovered what Enchanted Rock in Fredericksburg, Texas is. I’d seen the signs for it when we had one through the town before and when I mentioned to G that I was curious we drove the 17 miles out of our way to have a look at it. It’s fantastic, a huge dome made entirely out of pink granite, and you’re allowed to hike all the way to the top of it if you can.

We weren’t, and I’m going to blame having the kids with us on that one, because it is kinda steep. But it’s a pretty intense hike, and I’m not entirely sure we could’ve made it anyway, but I’d like to try it again sometime and find out.(Wait, the Goblin King wants you to know that of course he could’ve made it, so there’s that cleared up. Humor him please, the guy is stuck driving a chick car for the next 4 days.)

So now we are in Corpus Christi. Love the hotel we are staying at. We are right on the beach and plan to beach it up to our heart’s content later today. Love me some ocean, I really, really do. And I hope to be here to recap soon….but probably not sooner then Tuesday or so. We’ll see- it’s hard for me to keep away it seems.

  • Hey Lydia,
I’m so glad you are getting some chill time. Corpus is awesome! I actually went to high school in Port Aransas. If you get time, load everyone up in the chick car and drive north a bit to check it out. Their beaches are pretty and there are a lot of nice little restaurants.

  • You can never go wrong with country!!! I hope yall have an amazing time! I LOVE the beach! That’s one of the many, many things I miss about California. Also I see that as kind of an incentive to get in shape before summer ( cause I plan on going to the beach a couple times-maybe), but just so you know trying to diet your last semester of nursing school is nearly impossible! ;)

    • The being in shape on the beach thing? I failed that, but the trip was pretty spontanious so I’m okay with that. I hope the last semester flys by, but then again maybe not….why do I feel like singing “You’re miss this by Trace Atkins all of a sudden? ;)

      • Cause its an awesome song and I probably will miss it (ironically :p)… its passing by sooo fast. I’m scared. Lol.

  • Have a brilliant time with the family! The beach sounds like heaven compared to the fucking perpetual snow that keeps falling on us here in the midwest! I swear I need to move to where the sun shines all year round. I’m not meant for this caca:)( I put that in there just for you:) Have a blast, get a tan and have a shot of tequila for me!

    • I appreciate the caca addition, silly lady- and I hope the snow doesn’t stick around too much longer. (I’ll try to never complain about heat again as a show of sympathy for those getting hammered by snow..okay for a little while at least I promise that, come summer it’s my right ;)

  • Jealous.

    That’s all.

    • I’m having the most wretched time, and beach life is overrated and…yeah okay I’m lying and I can’t really think of anything bad to say about our vacation so far, but come summer when everyone else takes their vacations? I’ll be seething in jealously because this one will have worn off by then, probably.
      Or something. :)

  • ENVY. Also? I’ve never known enough about cars to judge masculine or feminine. Unless there’s outward genitalia.

    You know, those cars.
