Tommorow we will be taking the inlaws on a car trip to San Antonio. Showing them around our little town has been fun, but honestly- we ran out of things to show them three days ago. San Antonio will be our last chance to dazzle them before they go back home on Wednesday morning.
We are planning, hoping, pleading with the powers that be to be on the road by 8am. Realistically it’ll be 9 at the earliest. If we are actually making some headway by 11 I’ll bless my lucky stars. I may sound a little jaded, but my children, especially on days when we have to be somewhere by an appointed time, are the pokiest kids in creation. It takes about an hour just to get one shoe on, if you want to be fancy and add a sock- you’re looking at 30 more minutes. It hurts me that you think I’m exaggerating-moi? Perish the thought, I only embellish.
But anyway, tonight feels like the night before some kind of top secret special mission surprise attack, I’m just sitting here going over last minute linguistics. We’ll need snacks, lots of them. I’ve individually packaged cheese crackers, dry cereal, gummy snacks and there’s my secret, pull out Only in dire emergency situations, lollipops. I know, I know cavities on a stick- but seriously when I have to use them they are worth every bit of extra time with a toothbrush. I’ve packed a cooler with juices and cleaned the portable potty. I’ve packaged spare outfits in big zip-lock bags to keep in my purse for “emergencies”.
There’s the bag with toilet tissue for the less then hospitable gas stations on the way and the giant bottle of hand sanitizer and wippies. With this terific trifecta I feel safe to face any germies lurking out there.
And then there’s the tiny plastic toys, glow in the dark sticks: awesome if/when we’re driving at night, the notebooks and pens, the ipod and charger (though I hate to relie on that because we only have one). I think I’m ready, I hope I’m ready but panic still lies in the pit of my stomach. And then it dawns on me, for pete’s sake: it’s only a 3 1/2 hour trip!
I should probably go pack more cheese crackers…..
