My Gizmo’s Rapunzel Cake

Gizmo is a huge fan of Rapunzel. She’s loved every variation of the story that she’s been introduced to. She loved the storybook version, The Fairytale Theater version and when she saw it, the Barbie version. I’d have to say though that the Tangled movie is her favorite Rapunzel variation so far. Tangled actually knocked The Little Mermaid off her favorite Disney Princess of all time pedestal, which was no small feat I assure you.

It didn’t surprise me too much then, when I asked Gizmo what kind of Birthday cake she would like this year and she answered Tangled!  I asked if she wanted me to buy an actual Tangled cake(because I would’ve been fine with that because…well,HEB whipped cream frosting, yum) or if she wanted me to make her a Rapunzel cake. She said she wanted me to make a Rapunzel cake, so I got to planning.

This is what I came up with:

It was a strawberry cake with strawberry frosting per Gizmo’s request. (I dyed the frosting with food colors when needed.)

I baked the cake using a large rectangle pan(shown in picture) and cut out the shapes that I used once the cake had cooled. Rapunzel is made out of marshmillow, one of Gizmo’s favorite treats. This cake was made the night before Gizmo’s birthday, carefully covered and kept inside the cooled oven until her party.

Gizmo woke up to pink pancakes, our traditional family birthday breakfast.

She also got to open her birthday cards from her Grandparents, Aunt Uncle and cousin in England.

The girls usually recieve at least one birthday badge from their English relatives but this year Gizmo got 4! I thought that this was both fitting and pretty cool.(Of course I lost the picture I took of her wearing all four badges at once.)

I was also able to tell Gizmo that some of her very close friends(who  also happen to be her cousins) would be coming  by to celebrate with her later. She was really happy about that and then very impatient so I’ll be saving surprises like that til closer to the time of the party next time.)

Gizmo’s little friends and her were very pleased with the Rapunzel cake.

We all sang Happy Birthday, presents were opened and even though the whole thing was simple I could tell that Gizmo had a great time.

3 year old Birthday at Home

pink pancakes

Whenever one of our children has a birthday we have a little tradition that we do in the morning. Pink pancakes. It’s fun and I think a nice way to start the day off.

I had planned on making a pumpkin shaped cake but as I was mixing the ingredients for it, my little one asked for a mermaid cake, a little mermaid cake, to be exact. Mermaid cake? Ok sure kid, I thought….except that I didn’t exactly know how to accomplish this. It would be fun to try with the right tools but I  didn’t have tips or the frosting bags or even the little tubes of gel you can get at the store. I had white frosting because little one doesn’t like orange so I had thought a white pumpkin would be cute. Luckily I had food coloring and ziploc bags. I frosted the cake white and then used a toothpick to draw my design on top. I had practiced what image I wanted on notebook paper so it wasn’t too hard. Once that was done I traced the image in with frosting that I had tinted blue. I premixed it in a bowl and then transferred it to a ziploc bag. After I closed the bag I manipulated the frosting to one of the corners and cut the very tip off. The brown rock on the cake is crumbled up shredded wheat.
