Paper Mache recipe and people

The girls and I have been playing with paper mache lately. We’ve made paper mache people, paper mache masks and paper mache bowls. I thought I’d share how to make the people for now. Kids are able to help with a lot of the steps. The girls helped me mix the glue but I stirred it over the stove while they tore pieces of newspaper for the next step.

This is my favorite glue recipe:

Cooked Flour/Water Glue-

1 cup flour

1 cup water

*1 tablespoon salt(added at the end)

Directions: Mix the water and flour together until the two are well blended. Bring this to a boil over medium heat, stirring it the entire time. Once the glue reaches a smooth, custard like appearance remove it from heat. The whole process should take 4 to 5 minutes. Once this is cool you can use it to paper mache. Anything left over can be stored in the refrigerator and used as you would use regular glue.

It's not really yummy, and it's not supposed to be pink unless you've colored it on request.

We made paper mache people for our first project using small bottles and semi inflated balloons.

For these you’ll need:

Strips of newspaper

Balloons

*Masking tape

a plastic bottle that has been rinsed

newspaper

A work surface prepped for messiness. Newspaper is okay but cardboard is better as you won’t have to worry about the glue seeping through it and onto your table.

Steps: Blow the balloons up slightly and then tie them closed or use balloons that were once normal size and have now deflated. At this point you either tape the balloons to the bottles with masking tape or just hold them in place as you cover both with the first layer of paper mache.

Rub the balloon with a small amount of oil before covering it with newspaper. This will help the balloon detach when you want it to.

You’ll need strips torn from newspaper or used copy machine paper that are an inch wide and four inches long. Obviously it’s not a big deal if your paper are a little shorter, ours were all sizes, but that is the ideal size to work with.

Dip the strips into the glue and get rid of the excess with your fingers so that it is not dripping. You’ll need to cover the form you’ve made with inter-lapping layers of the newspaper soaked with the glue.

Cover the forms with about four layers of paper mache.

Put these in spot to dry that is not too cold or too hot. Outside where there’s a breeze going is ideal or inside with a small fan blowing would be good too.  This is just to speed the drying process up.

Once your forms are dry pop the balloon inside with a straight pin. Cover the surface with white paint. Let this dry.

The forms are now ready to be decorated with ever colors of paint that you choose. You can also glue on pieces of fabric or construction paper, sequins…anything you can think of really.

The finished forms may be hard to draw a face on. If this is the case with your forms-draw the face on to a piece of paper that you’ve cut to fit the form’s face. Glue this on.

We made a video of the first steps that you’ll need to follow, if you’ve never dealt with paper mache it might be helpful. Okay, it might not be all that helpful but it’s funny to watch us try to make a craft tutorial…so there’s that. ;) The video starts off dark but lightens later.

Tissue Roll Butterfly Craft

We’ve been enjoying these  little guys around the house this month and thought I’d share how we made them. They are super simple and only take a few items that you probably have around the house already. We used:

Toilet tissue rolls

White Construction paper

Scissors

Glue

Goggle eyes

Pipe cleaners

a hole puncher

To decorate:

Stickers

Markers

Paint

paint brushes

First I cut the wings out. I folded  our piece of construction paper into quarters and the folded each quarter in half. I drew on a B shape on the one side that connected to the crease in the paper. I cut this out without unfolding the paper and when I opened the paper up I had a nice pair of wings. We used white paper because I wanted to give the girls the option of painting  the wings, but you can use any color paper that you would like to. I had both Gizmo and the kid paint their butterfly bodies (toilet tissue rolls)and we let these dry.
Once the rolls were dry we started decorating. The girls glued on the google eyes and drew faces using a marker.  We glued on the wings and let them set for a minute. After this we decorated the wings. The kid painted hers Giz decided to use stickers. The antennas were the last to go on. I helped the girls punch one hole on each side of the butterfly’s head. We then threaded a pipe cleaner through the one hole and then through the other. We made sure they were the same length on either side and then twisted them together in the middle.

The pipe clear antennas were then curled a bit on each end to look more antenna-ish. :)

I wanted to  hang these up so I punched one more hole in back and made a loop out of floral wire. I love seeing these hang above our head as we eat our meals and they remind us of all of our butterfly friends we hope to catch glimpses of outside!

Tissue Paper Stained Glass for Easter

I have got to start letting my husband come up with my titles….or writing these posts when I’m more awake, one of those two. ;)

We’ve used this technique before here, but I wanted to change things up a little for Easter.

Materials Needed:

Glue (we used homemade but any water based glue would work)

Tissue Gift Paper

Scissors

Sharpie Marker

Plastic Shopping Bag

Tape

I cut a plastic shopping bag in half and taped each half to our table.(One for each of my littles.)

I then drew  an egg on one bag (for Gizmo) and a bunny on an another (for the Kid  as she wasn’t feeling eggy )with a sharpie marker.

I had the girls cover the plastic with glue, using a paintbrush. (I even had to have a go at making one myself.)

I had set out a large tub of tissue paper squares in various sizes, but you could also let a child tear or cut these themselves.

The kids added the tissue paper squares wherever they wanted to on their plastic bag templates. *This is pretty fail-safe, so do not worry if you or your child go over the template, you will cut out the shape later! If your tissue tears while your child is dabbing the glue on top just patch it up with one of your tissue squares…trust me it works fine.

When they had finished adding the squares they wanted we covered the whole thing  with a larger piece of tissue paper and then brushed more glue on top of this.

We let this dry for about two hours and then I was able to easily peel their tissue paper art off.

my egg, now dry. See how the marker bled through? I'm probably the only one who finds this cool...

The sharpie bleeds itself onto the tissue paper and this makes it very easy to cut out the shape that has been drawn on the plastic bag.

We’ve hung these up on our window using a few pieces of tape and plan on making many more for Easter.

This is a great way to re-use any tissue gift wrap that you’ve received with a present, especially if it’s too crumbled to use in wrapping another present.

Side note: You may have noticed that his post is very Littles free, this is because when Gizmo did the craft while her sis was at school….I forgot to take pictures until after she had finished (bloggy fail) and because I almost forgot again when the Kid did hers after school.

I only managed to get this shot of her bolting from the table when Gizmo called her to play. Oh well-c’est la vie right? :)
