Nursery Rhyme Partay

Last Friday we partied down like it was 1995…okay maybe not, I don’t really remember much about 1995 if I’m being honest. We did have a nursery rhyme party to end a week of nursery rhyme fun though, and it was pretty neat if I say so myself. :)

To make our party festive I made some fun sheep cupcakes. Each was made with two cupcakes pushed together. The sheep’s wool is made up of large marshmallows that I cut up into smaller pieces, but mini marshmallows would be much easier. (Or near by store just happened to be out of those.)

I also made a Little Bo Peep cake to go with the cupcakes. We also had hot dogs and little boy blue haystacks. It was a fun after school surprise for my oldest to come home to and pretty easy to throw together on a whim.

The book we used last week to learn about nursery rhymes was Mary Engelbreit’s Mother Goose. I’m a huge fan of Mary’s illustrations and bought this book for my oldest’s 1st birthday. I love her take on the nursery rhymes that I grew up with myself. I have enjoyed reading the rhymes to my kids and then doing the activities or snacks that go with them. I think the kids got a lot out of doing this and I enjoyed it too. I can’t wait to try this same approach with other books too. :)

Hickory, Dickory, Dock

The mouse ran up the clock. :) Or mice in this case. This craft is really good if you have more then one child to put it together(especially an older child) & mom has to help too. I think it’d be great as a centerpiece… and that may be a hint for what I’m sharing tomorrow.

Materials Needed:

Glue

Scissors

Stapler

Empty oatmeal container and lid

Construction paper in two colors

Piper cleaner, cut in two pieces, one longer then the other

Paint brush

White paint

Small square cut from a sponge

clothespin

clear tape

Mouse print out

1.Measure your oatmeal container to see how much construction paper you will need. Cut it accordingly.

2. Cut a small square from a sponge. Make a stamper from it by attaching it to a clothespin.

3.Pour a small amount of white paint into a tray. (We used the lid from a coffee container. Blot the sponge stamp with paint. Use this to make “bricks” on the construction paper you cut. Let dry.

4. Use the oatmeal lid to trace a circle on construction paper in the same color. Cut a thin strip of construction paper and form a loop with it, glue together. Glue this onto the circle.  Put this to the side and let dry.

5.  Paint your oatmeal lid white & let dry. Once dry use marker to draw the numbers on it, this will be the clock face. Make a hole in the middle of the oatmeal lid, thread the pipe cleaners through this hole. Bend them in back to hold them in place. These will be the clock’s hands. Cut them if they are too long and bend the ends to form the hands.

6. Glue the construction paper with the bricks onto the oatmeal container.

7.Tape the completed clock face to the loop you made earlier.  Glue the whole thing onto the construction paper covered oatmeal container. Let dry.

8. Meanwhile color the three mice and cut them out. You can then glue these around the clock face.

9.Cut  two inches from the long side of the second color of construction paper, fold it to form a cone. Glue this on top of your clock tower.

Now your hickory, dickory dock clock tower is complete!

For more hickory dickory fun,  here’s a really great song with hand gestures I like to do with my girls. I think it goes great with this craft:
