It all started on Sunday morning with Gizmo, “I want to get married today. Will you marry me today?” she asked her big sister who promptly removed little sister’s hand from her arm and answered with a loud,”No!”
There were tears, there was annoyance, there was running and the slamming of doors(the kid tried explaining why she wouldn’t marry her sister once and then started to run away from her while Giz chased her yelling, “Marry me please! Marry me, I just want to get married!”)
I finally stepped in,” Your sister doesn’t want to marry you sweetie, maybe you could marry your bear or something instead?”
That led to Giz biting her nails while thinking it over and the kid coming back with a large bear in tow.
“I don’t want to marry him.” Giz pushed the bear away roughly and it fell to the floor with a thud.
“Maybe you could pick a different one to marry then?”
The Kid came back with our beloved Giraffe-moose, we call him that because he’s a moose..with giraffe spots. I don’t know why he has giraffe markings but he’s been a favorite ever since my brother gave him to the Kid on her first Valentine’s Day.
“Yes, that one but he doesn’t want to marry me.” the kid and I exchanged looks and Giz ran out herself this time, when she came back she was carrying a large blue Easter bunny.
“He’s going to marry her.” said Gizmo, grinning triumphantly.
“She needs a dress and flowers. I’m making the dress.” the kid set to work looking through my fabric scraps and Giz and I went outside to pick flowers.
Two dresses(Easter rabbit had to have a bridesmaid once Gizmo decided she wanted to help make a dress too) a vase of wild flowers, a bouquet of the same flowers and a reception table in our kitchen later and we were all set to have a wedding.
“Where are you having the wedding?” I asked
“The front yard.”
“Not maybe in here somewhere instead? Or maybe the back yard? We could set it up nice for the wedding.”
“Nope, the front yard.”
So I helped them cart the wedding party plus quests onto our driveway and we set up the wedding while I felt a little silly in case our neighbors came out and saw me…well playing with stuffed animals.
I got around that by offering to take the wedding photos, but I still felt a little silly.
It was worth it though, the girls had a blast and it was a fun way to break up what had been a pretty slow day up to that point.
The kid voiced the parts of the lemur preacher and the bride and groom while Gizmo sat on the groom’s side and made the toys there clap at the appropriate times.
After “the wedding ” we came inside and were having cupcakes at our pretend reception when we were surprised by a knock. It was my parents who had decided to stop in and check on us as we had been car-less for the past four days.
“Grandma and Grandpa came for our wedding party!” Gizmo was overjoyed at this thought and luckily my parents were happy to play along.
My mom even offered a wedding gift( a little notebook and a pen from her purse) and it was a nice little end to our bunny wedding.
