Education made a huge impact on me. My whole life has been so shaped by the teachers that really took it upon themselves to broaden my horizons.
My kindergarten teacher’s name was Miss Terry and she taught me that I had a natural curiosity that was best fed through knowledge. I think that I must have driven the woman crazy with all of my questions, but she never failed to give me an answer. If she didn’t know something she didn’t leave me with an I don’t know,she tried to find the answer. It’s something that I felt so thankful for that as I grew older I always tried to do it myself whenever a child asked me a question.
Mrs Tankersly was my 2nd grade teacher who opened me to the wonders of books and how you can lose yourself in them. More than that she believed in me so much that years later when I was in my late twenties she let me know that she still scanned bookshelves for my name. That meant a lot to me then and it still means a lot to me now.
Mr. Cavness was my high school art teacher. He created brilliant works of art and being taught by him was a real privilege. Besides the basics, he fully immersed our class into the history of art and how to apply it to our own art work. Were we masters? I learned that you gain a respect for art and those who create it when you stop to truly see what they have accomplished. Besides that Mr Cavness first introduced me to Frida Kahlo, who led me to know that pain and emotion can be merged to create beauty.
There were so, so many great teachers that I had the privilege to know growing up. They all left their mark on me in some way. I can only hope that my own children have the opportunity to meet and be shaped by such great teachers in their own life.
I am a better person today because of education. I am a person who tries to fill my children with a love of learning. I try to listen to what they are interested in and I try to find answers for them because someone took the time to do those things for me. I was taken out of a sphere that didn’t quite fit me and allowed to see a bigger world where I fit better. It made me feel less alone and more a part of something. Education has the power to do that, and this is why it is so important to me.
